Tell Congress — Don't Reverse Environmental and Health Safeguards

Industrial tower burning methane with text: Take action to protect our environmental safeguards

Critical environmental and health protections are at risk. With the new administration and Republicans in control of both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, there will be numerous attempts to rollback essential safeguards designed to protect clean water, the environment, and public health. Similar to recent efforts to freeze federal funding, these rollbacks would cause more confusion and harm. This would open doors for polluters, not protect our communities.

Protections that may be at risk include:

  • The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Methane Emissions Reduction Program’s Waste Emissions Charge, which implements a commonsense charge on methane and incentivizes the oil and gas industry to reduce their methane emissions. Reducing methane pollution is critical to improving air quality and slowing down our current rate of global warming.
  • The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Conservation Standards for Consumer Water Heaters, which creates energy conservation standards for various products and equipment, including water heaters. These standards are an important step to reduce utility bills, cut energy waste, and reduce harmful carbon dioxide pollution that contributes to climate change.
  • The EPA’s National Primary Drinking Water Regulations for Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (also known as LCRI), which requires the full replacement of all lead service lines in regulated drinking water systems within 10 years. It is crucial to reduce lead exposure wherever we can. Learn more about Clean Water Action’s work on lead in drinking water.
