The Problem:
An excessive amount of plastic is used in packaging food and drink containers while leaching toxins into what we eat and drink. We need to put a stop to this.
Consumers believe plastic is being recycled but most (94-95%) is being taken to landfills and incinerators because of the multitude of chemicals used in their production.
A new study by PlastChem shows there are over 4,200 chemicals used in plastics production that are highly hazardous to human health. Some of these chemicals migrate from packaging into the foods and beverages we consume and are toxic during production and disposal. Other recent studies have shown that plastic has crossed the blood-brain barrier and there is the weight of a plastic spoon's worth of micro and nano plastics in the average person’s brain, as well as throughout the human body.
The Solution:
We need to reduce the packaging of all products through New Jersey's Packaging and Paper Product Stewardship Act or Extended Producer Responsiblity (EPR) (S3398 / A5009)! This legislation will ensure that better choices are made by the producer to reduce single-use packaging (e.g. product packaging, containers, wrappers, beverage bottles) by reducing the amount and/or thickness of plastic, eliminating packaging layers and/or choosing alternative materials that are better able to be recycled.
