Director Kandyce Perry , NJDEP Office of Environmental Justice
Dear Director Kandyce Perry, I strongly urge NJDEP to deny any permits that would allow either new facilities or the expansion of existing ones in already overburdened communities. These neighborhoods continue to bear the brunt of environmental health stressors, with higher rates of asthma, cancer, and other chronic illnesses linked to decades of toxic exposure. Under New Jersey’s Environmental Justice Law, cumulative impacts must be considered. This means looking not only at the pollution a single project may cause, but also at the decades of contamination and harmful emissions already endured by our communities. Adding even a small amount of additional pollution deepens the injustice and is absolutely unacceptable. Instead of allowing new or expanded facilities that add to the burden, NJDEP should prioritize reducing existing pollution and holding current facilities accountable for their emissions. Approving more sources of harm contradicts the Department’s own recognition that “the legacy of siting sources of pollution in overburdened communities continues to pose a threat to the health, well-being, and economic success of the State’s most vulnerable residents.” It is past time to reverse this legacy, not extend it.
Optional: Share Your Story to the DEP! Helpful Prompts: 1) Health issues like asthma or breathing problems in your family 2) Pollution you’ve noticed (trucks, smoke, odors, noise) near your home or school 3) How industry or traffic has made daily life harder or less safe 4) Why you believe your neighborhood already has too much pollution 5) What you want to see instead (cleaner air, fewer permits, investment in health or green spaces)
