Dear Chairs and Vice Chairs of the Public Health Committee,

I am writing today to express my support for An Act to ensure cleaner air for communities overburdened by outdoor air pollution, H.2369/S.1548, and to ask you to ensure it receives a favorable vote from the Public Health Committee.

While the Commonwealth’s air monitoring network includes 20 air monitors measuring fine particulate matter and 8 monitors for black carbon, 13 of those monitors are not located near roadways, ports, energy infrastructure, or other potential pollution hotspots. We need an expanded air monitoring network throughout Massachusetts to measure ultrafine particulate matter and black carbon in locations where pollution is most likely to be found.

Residents deserve to know what's in the air we breathe, especially in areas with known air pollution sources. Air pollution is responsible for almost 2,800 deaths a year in Massachusetts. The stakes are high, and meaningful legislation needs to be advanced to address this crisis.
