San Francisco Recreation and Parks
Dear Mr. Mauer and Distinguished Members of the Recreation and Parks Commission: I am writing as a concerned San Francisco resident to urge the Recreation and Parks Department not to install artificial turf at Crocker Amazon Park. Artificial turf has been widely shown to be harmful to people, the environment, and long-term city sustainability goals. While it was once marketed as a way to save water and reduce maintenance, the reality is quite the opposite. Artificial turf contains toxic plastics and chemicals that leach into soil and groundwater, exposing athletes and children to health risks. It also requires frequent cleaning and cooling, which makes it surprisingly water-intensive. Moreover, turf fields can become dangerously hot in the sun — sometimes reaching temperatures high enough to cause heat stress — and players are more likely to suffer serious wounds and infections on these surfaces. Once the turf wears out, it becomes non-recyclable plastic waste, adding to our environmental burden. In contrast, natural grass, when planted with the right local species, can be managed with minimal water, little to no pesticide use, and lower maintenance costs. Grass fields stay cooler, reduce injuries, and create a more sustainable, safe, and enjoyable space for our community. Please don’t be swayed by the San Francisco Giants’ support of this project. Professional baseball and soccer teams, including the Giants, overwhelmingly play on grass for the reasons stated above, and even professional football players are now calling for an end to artificial turf nationwide. San Francisco should lead by example and protect both public health and the environment by keeping Crocker Amazon Park natural. Thank you for considering community input on this important issue. I hope you will reject the proposal to install artificial turf and instead invest in sustainable natural grass solutions. Sincerely, {user_data~First Name} {user_data~Last Name}
