Action Alert: Addressing Land Use of Biosolids with PFAS

US wastewater treatment plants produce millions of pounds of sludge each year, much of which is spread across farms as fertilizer. Advocates are pushing to close the pretreatment wastewater gap to protect Americans from PFAS in both their water and soils. Photo by Preston Keres / USDA / FPAC.

PFAS are a group of thousands of human-made toxic chemicals. Exposure to PFAS chemicals has been linked to serious health problems. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is revising a policy to limit the exposure of PFAS through the land application of biosolids. The policy is currently out for public comment until September 2nd.

Weigh in with PA DEP today and let them know that while this is positive progress, the policy needs to be strengthened to reduce the impact on our soil, water, farms, animals and environment.
