Take Action: Protecting Against Microplastics

The Problem:

Microplastics are being added to everyday products even though less harmful options exist. These microplastics can easily be ingested and inhaled and can make us sick. The U.S. government has started the process of eliminating microplastics with the Microbead-free Waters Act of 2015 but more needs to be done.

The Solution:

We need state legislation. As a first step, chewing gum, tea bags, personal care products including toothpaste, cosmetics, cleaning products, and all forms of foodware should be labeled if they contain microplastics. After three years, these microplastics need to be eliminated to reduce customers’ exposure to unnecessary plastics and toxics.

Take Action! Email your NJ state Assemblymember and ask them to support A5452 (Protecting Against Microplastics Act), requiring truth in labeling and elimination of microplastics from certain products.
